WINTERIZING TIPS FROM MFI
MOTORCYCLE FACTORY INC would like to offer these tips should you be putting your bike up for winter. After reading through, if you have any remaining questions, please feel free to give us a call or stop by.
Change the Oil
Even if the oil is not due for a change, it is best to do so before putting the bike up for winter. Contaminants in used oil will harm internal engine parts as the bikes sits throughout the winter season. We’ll be happy to do the oil change for you here at the store.
Fuel Stabilizer and Carburetor Prep
Add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank, then crank over the bike and run for at least 10 minutes to ensure mixture throughout the fuel lines and carburetor. The carbs shouldn’t have to be drained unless the bike will be sitting for an extended amount of time.
Battery Storage
Motorcycles often have a small amount of current running through the battery, even when the bike is off, so it is best to remove the battery and place it on a tender. We strongly recommend using the “Optimate 3” battery tender, available here at the store.
Surface Protection
Even if you are not fond of waxing and washing your ride, there is a practical reason for doing so before winter. The wax will act as a protector against rust and other harmful elements during storage. You will also want to apply a penetrating oil to the chain and metal components of the bike. We recommend using Silkolene’s “All In One” spray, which will lubricate and prevent rust and corrosion, and is readily available here at MFI.
Tires
Inflate both tires to the maximum recommended pressure. Check with your air pressure gauge periodically, as the colder air will condense in your tires, causing lower pressure.
Cover the Bike
A specifically designed motorcycle cover is made of a mildew resistant material that will breathe and not trap in moisture. A tarp or sheet simply will not do. If you don’t currently own a motorcycle cover, we have plenty for you to choose from here at Motorcycle Factory Inc.
